June is observed around the world as Refugee Awareness Month culminating in World Refugee Day on 20th June. In the UK Refugee Week is celebrating its 25th year with the theme of compassion.

Champions for Children - double your donation

During Refugee Month we are participating in the Champions for Children match funding campaign from 6th June – 20th June 2023.

During this campaign charities taking part will raise public donations which will be DOUBLED through matched funding supported by The Childhood Trust Huge and individual donors who have contributed via pledges to kickstart the campaign to support our direct work with child victims of trafficking:

to develop our Hardship Fund to mitigate the cost-of-living crisis and provide vouchers to those in need of food, clothing & other provisions
expand our services providing more 1:1 and groups sessions and activities to support and promote children's wellbeing

Creativity as a Container: exploring the use of myth and fairy tales in facilitating safe space while supporting children and young people victims of trafficking.

This workshop explores the themes of power, control, exploitation, grief, and trauma using ageless fairy tales as a case study. The workshop aims to share practical tools and theory with practitioners who support children and young people living with trauma. Participants will experience a trauma informed session that highlights the importance of safe space while supporting children and young people and learn creative ways to create it. We will be guided by the Jungian theory of archetypes and the Sesame approach to therapy.

Join us to experience the transformative force of creativity!

This is an experiential session delivered in person. The workshop is recommended to youth workers, social workers, key workers and mental health practitioners or anyone interested to learn something new! Everyone is welcome!

The workshop will be facilitated by Elias Matar the youth programme manager at ECPAT UK. Elias Matar is a play specialist, drama and movement therapist, workshop facilitator, performer storyteller.

At a further High Court hearing on 15th September Mr Justice Chamberlain ordered the Home Office to take all possible steps to transfer all unaccompanied children seeking asylum currently in Home Office hotels to local authority care by 22 September 2023.

At a further High Court hearing on 17th August Mr Justice Chamberlain ordered continued oversight of the treatment of unaccompanied children by the Home Secretary and Kent County Council, marking the unlawful conduct of the local authority by a specific declaration and setting out further conditions and evidence for the defendants to comply with and a further court hearing.

National Referral Mechanism

The National Referral Mechanism is a process set up by the Government to identify and support victims of trafficking in the UK. It was born out of the Government's obligation to identify victims under the Council of Europe Convention on Action against Human Trafficking, which came into force on 1 February 2008.

United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) is an international human rights treaty that grants all children and young people (aged 17 and under) a comprehensive set of rights. The UK signed the Convention on 19 April 1990, ratified it on 16 December 1991 and it came into force on 15 January 1992.
