As part of our Partnership Against Child Trafficking (PACT) project, ECPAT UK has produced a guide to assist local authorities to create or update their child trafficking and modern slavery policy.

The Creating a child trafficking and modern slavery policy document: Suggestions and recommendations for local authorities policy guide was drafted to provide local authorities with a summary of what should be included in a child trafficking and modern slavery policy document and can be used as a starting point for local authorities to develop their own policies.

Catherine Baker, senior campaigns and parliamentary officer at ECPAT UK, said

'Local authorities are often the first points of contact trafficked children have with adults they can trust, and they have statutory duties to provide trafficked children with care that meets their needs and keeps them safe.

'With the numbers of potential child victims increasing each year, it is more vital than ever for local authorities to have effective policies in place to guide response to these vulnerable children.'

The guide was developed in light of the Modern Slavery Act and revised statutory guidance issued by the Department of Education on the Care of unaccompanied migrant children and child victims of modern slavery, however it is not exhaustive and should be reviewed regularly in line with new developments in practice and guidance.
