ECPAT UK updates flagship publication on child trafficking

ECPAT UK has updated its flagship FAQs on child trafficking publication five years after its launch. The publication has become an essential resource for practitioners, campaigners, policy makers and the general public to inform themselves about child trafficking and children’s rights, and ensure the needs of trafficked children are considered at every level of UK society.

The FAQs on child trafficking were developed in response to the issues identified and questions received by ECPAT UK staff in daily interactions with frontline practitioners and children who have been trafficked. The publication aims to fill these gaps and provide a comprehensive resource that enhances knowledge, policy and practice.

The guide has been updated to reflect emerging trends in child trafficking and exploitation, as well as changes to legislation, policy and practice.

Debbie Beadle, Director of Programmes at ECPAT UK, said

‘The number of children identified as potential victims of trafficking in the UK continues to rise each year. Last year, over 3,000 children were identified as potential victims by practitioners, although we know this is likely to be the tip of the iceberg as many victims remain unidentified.

‘We’re pleased to see that five years after its initial release, our FAQs on child trafficking are an invaluable resource for practitioners and others across the UK. Child trafficking is a complex issue, but our accessible guide is helping practitioners identify victims and ensure they are supported and protected in accordance with their rights and needs.’

ECPAT UK continues to call on the government to immediately strengthen protection for trafficked children through legislation, policy and practice. Our current campaign calls on the Home Secretary to provide independent guardianship for all trafficked and unaccompanied children, to support them to access their rights within the many complex systems they face.

The FAQs on child trafficking supports our campaigns by enhancing understanding about the particular issues faced by trafficked children.

National Referral Mechanism

The National Referral Mechanism is a process set up by the Government to identify and support victims of trafficking in the UK. It was born out of the Government's obligation to identify victims under the Council of Europe Convention on Action against Human Trafficking, which came into force on 1 February 2008.

United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) is an international human rights treaty that grants all children and young people (aged 17 and under) a comprehensive set of rights. The UK signed the Convention on 19 April 1990, ratified it on 16 December 1991 and it came into force on 15 January 1992.
